ROTARY CLUB OF COIMBATORE DOWNTOWN

Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown is a young and vibrant Rotary Club based in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. The club is a part of RI District 3201, Zone 5 of South Asian Region of Rotary International. RI District 3201 covers parts of Tamil Nadu (Coimbatore) and Kerala (Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Cochin). The Rotary Club was initiated by Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown under the stewardship of Rtn.C.T.Thiagarajan. The club was chartered on 19 June 2012 and was inaugurated on 30 June 2012.

In the span of 8 years the club has carved a niche for itself with its captivating camaraderie and soulful service projects. The club with 50+ members and 30+average age is abuzz with sports and fellowship which forms the heart of the club. The heartbeat of the club is the service projects which cater to diverse needs and avenues. Since a good majority of the club members are beneficiaries of young leader programmes like Rotaract & Interact, the club is popular for its youth service activities.

History

Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown was constantly tracking alumni of Rotaract programme as a part of its membership development activity. Around the year 2010-11, Rtn CT Thiagarajan, a popular Rotarian of the club and the city understood that more than a dozen Rotaract alumni wanted to get themselves involved into Rotary. Rtn CT Thiagarajan initiated a meeting of these past Rotaract Leaders on 05 September 2010. After a series of meetings and understanding of Rotary, at the Midtown under the stewardship of Rtn.C.T.Thiagarajan. The club was chartered on 19 June 2012 with 25 charter members and was inaugurated on 30 June 2012.

Rtn.Santosh is the Charter President of the Club and he carefully nurtured the club, its image and growth in the year 2012-13.

Rtn.Godwin was the second President of the club in 2013-14 and with every second, he ensured that the club was second to none.

Rtn.P.S.Prakash lighted up Rotary in the year 2014-15 and gave the club new dimensions and disciplines.

Rtn.P.Vijayragahavan was the president for the year 2015-16 and as the fourth president, he ensured that our club was at the forefront as we had fabulous 4 years.

Rtn.N.S.R.Naarayanan was our fifth President (2016-17) and he silently set up some reforms and brought in some project ideas that kept our club flag flying high

Rtn.Sumit Kumar Prasad took over the mantle of the club in 2017-18 as our sixth President. Like the sportsman he is, Rtn Sumit ensured that the club was abuzz with activity so that the health of the club can be enhanced.

Rtn.Dr.P.Krishnananda Rao was our seventh President(2018-19) and as a Doctor, his prescriptions ensured that our club evolved with the changing times, settled down in its systems and policies and grew in membership and activities.

Rtn.Pon.Rathnavel was our eighth President and took office in 2019-20. Being a Professor, he ticked almost all the boxes of evaluation of the club.

Rtn.S.Sathish will herald the club as its President in the year 2020-21. As a leader in the insurance industry, the club is rest assured in safe hands.

As of 19 June 2020, as the club completes 8 years, it boasts of 52 members and more than 1500 projects covering all avenues of service.,Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown is well known for its traffic awareness and management programmes. The monthly RODO and the annual "Helmet on Heads", "Road Safety Awareness Week" are well recognised.

The club has constructed and dedicated Library Block and Toilet Block at Pappampatti Panchayat Union School. The club has renovated toilets and established wash stations at Veerapandi Panchayat Middle School. The club has donated furniture, smart equipment and play items to Theetipalayam High School, Myleripalayam High School and Agnes Childrens School. The club also periodically supports WVS Special School.

The club has organized more than 40 medical camps and has granted more than 60 educational scholarships for the benefit of the downtrodden.

The club is renowned for its Vocational Awards titled "GURUVANDANAM" "iRISE" and “YOUNG MASTER OF INDIA”. The club has established a Vocational Training Centre at M/s Godwin Constructions, 3 university based Rotaract Clubs, 2 school based Interact Club and one community corps at Ammankulam

The club has been a trendsetter in bringing sports into Rotary. The club’s intra club cricket league Rotary Downtown League has been emulated by few clubs and the district. The club’s family event Rotary Downtown Badminton League is an unique family event that connects families. The club has been at the forefront in sports competitions among Rotary clubs in the region..
